Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are currently using cassette tapes, that I salvaged from the dumpster, to listen to quality literature. I would LOVE to move them into the 21st century and allow them to use a Kindle Fire e-reader to check out audio and e-books books from our local library.
My students are eager to become better readers!
One way to become a proficient reader is to listen to good readers read. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have good reading models at home, nor do they have easy access to quality books. The students in my class come from an impoverished area and 100% of students at my class receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
By using the Kindle to check out e-books and e-audiobooks my students will have daily access to a whole library of resources. They will have the opportunity to listen to quality books. And by adding a headphone jack, that I already use with our outdated cassette player, up to 4 students at a time can listen to and share the experience of good books. What a wonderful opportunity for these amazing kids!
Studies show that students who read daily for 20 minutes will read 1.8 million words per year, whereas, students who read only 1 minute per day will read only 8000 words.
That is a HUGE difference in the academic life of a child. Help us increase the number of minutes and words these kids read by giving them the opportunity to read more.
