All students are special no matter their race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or their backgrounds. The students in this class are a great group of boys and girls ranging from ages 7-8 and with very different backgrounds. Some of the students are vegan, some are Hispanic, some are in transition between homes, and some have never been inside a school until this year. Each student has their own rhythm that they like to learn and move to. Some of our students enjoy sitting and working hard, while others like to move around and receive more of an active type of learning.
With great diversity levels within this one classroom, each student should have the chance to meet and exceed their own personal goals as well as the goals of our school and community.
Each student is showing significant growth already and will continue to grow throughout the rest of the year. As our community is also very diverse in background, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status these goals can be very different for each individual child. Within the classroom, this diversity is honored through the notion of choice. Choice in a 21st Century Learning environment that will foster all expectations and goals.
My Project
With a large emphasis on 21st Century Learning skills including technology, students need to be actively engaged on computers and tablets throughout the school day. This is hard when technology is so limited within a school and class sizes are increasing. Students should have time, during class, to explore different forms of technology to become more prepared for the ever changing world that they are growing up in.
A class of 34 different learning styles need the ability to play, explore, challenge themselves, create safe understandings and develop technology skills that will help them be effective citizens that can achieve rigorous goals in their lifetime.
In order to do this more opportunities must be provided during the school day. More chances to dive in and explore. More chances to create safe searching habits and safe internet practices to protect them from problem tasks that they may face. More chances to develop typing and decoding skills that will make them proficient enough to be successful throughout their education and careers.
