Mr. Whitmore from Charlotte NC is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a laptop computer in order to become 21st century learners.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are 21st century learners in a 20th century classroom. They learn in a trailer without computers, which my school can not afford to purchase. I know they would be so much more engaged with at least one laptop computer. One computer is better than none at all (taking turns)!
They are part of a large, high poverty, urban school district (60% African-American, 30% Hispanic, 5% White, 5% other).
My school has 2000 students, many with very challenging situations at home. With the economy the way it's been the last two years, our district's cutbacks have destroyed any hope for adding technology to our classrooms. In today's world, books and worksheets do not keep our students engaged. They are accustomed to multiple stimuli, particularly computer-based learning. I borrowed a laptop from a friend recently to see if just one would help in my classroom - it was wonderful! My students rotated through the "laptop learning station," learning Spanish via aural and visual lessons. I'd love a laptop for each student, but I have to start somewhere. One permanent laptop, along with my desktop computer, would be a first step. Thank you for your consideration.
There are hundreds if not thousands of computer programs to learn Spanish. Learning a language requires reading, writing, listening, and speaking it - all of which a computer can help accomplish. Students will be able pretend to travel to Spanish speaking countries, interact with "pen pals" from Spanish speaking countries via Skype, and work on programs such as Castle Learning and APEX Learning.
All children learn in different ways.
In order to meet their diverse 21st century learning needs, teachers need technologically advanced teaching aids. I have none in my trailer, with no new items expected anytime in the near future. Just one laptop to start would be so helpful in achieving such essential differentiation. Thank you so much for your consideration.
