Each day I am humbled by my students' determination to make the world a better place. I have the privilege of instructing 70 young vibrant minds; 34 of which are in my homeroom class and 36 in a science and social studies class. Throughout the day, my students amaze me with their curiosity and empathy for the people and the world around them. I find that my students are most receptive to learning through play and discovery.
My class is a very diverse group, coming from various backgrounds and a multitude of needs and abilities.
I have the pleasure of teaching students who are gifted and talented, English Language Learners, students who receive special services for learning disabilities and physical challenges, among many other unique traits. I love all the students I work with and they give me motivation to be creative and try new things.
My Project
21st century classrooms are characterized by teachers facilitating learning and the learning is in the hands of the learner. This means that students have more ownership of their learning and participate by doing. 21st century learners need to have choice. Choice in the classroom does not mean a free-for-all in the activity or the subject. Choice in the classroom could be seen by students choosing a book to read or choosing a place to sit. Flexible seating gives students choice throughout the school day.
Students need a variety of seating options to choose from for their learning style.
Wobble cushions and bucket seats allow the students to evaluate their learning style and pick a seat that caters it. Students will learn discipline, the value of reflection, and autonomy through flexible seating.
