We are scholars, creators, and leaders. In our school, we strive to disrupt the narrative that race, economic status, and nationality should dictate whether or not a child can receive a quality education.
We are a Title I school in Washington, DC, our nation's Capital, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and a late afternoon snack.
Despite the setbacks that our students may face, we ensure that our students attaining an excellent education provided by quality educators. Our students might not come to school with all the materials they need for a number of reasons, but we strive to leverage our resources and those from our community of supporters to provide the highest-quality education despite economic and social barriers.
The second graders are moving into the main building! This is an exciting but also anxiety-inducing move. The condition of the room is decent, but much of the room is quite antiquated. There is currently a Promethean board in the classroom that is one of the first models, and it is completely inoperable. My students were so excited to be able to learn in an interactive way, but the look on their faces when the previous teacher told them it could not be repaired moved me to act.
My students crave the 21st Century classroom they see other teachers using where they can learn through interactive play and instruction.
A Promethean ActivBoard would do just that, and it would save a lot of room that the bulky version takes up. I plan to engage the students with interactive math lessons that boost not only engagement but confidence. When a student gets a question correct or can lean on the support from others in a public way, it has lasting positive effects on the students' outlook towards their learning.
I want my students to gain a growth mindset in their learning. Many times, their aspirations get knocked down through low self-esteem. My job is to build that up one-on-one, but when a whole classroom community can deliver that support due to the work they see each other doing together, it can make a world of a difference. Please help us start the year off right! Thank you for your continued support of my students.
