21st Century Learning in a Juvenile Detention Center

My students need an LCD projector, cable, and ceiling mount to learn how to utilize digital technology in their lives.

All children deserve an equal education. This is why I teach in a juvenile detention facility. These students are at risk students who have not had the easiest of lives. A lot of these students need help with their reading, writing, and basic math skills. The sad reality is that a lot of these students will wind up in a detention facility at another point in their lives, and therefore it is important that we do our best to empower them so that this will not be the case.

Classes at the juvenile detention center are taught in a recently renovated building. However, little thought or design was placed in digital technologies. We have the opportunity to teach these students basic technology skills which will assist them in finding a job once they leave the detention facility. All we need is the resources to be able to do this.

At my previous school, I benefited from a grant which enhanced the science education through technology. I saw first hand how digital technologies can benefit and motivate the students. I would like to start to transform my classroom into a 21st century learning environment. The first step is to get an LCD projector, cable and ceiling mount in the classroom. I will be able to project PowerPoint lessons, demonstrate how to use computers, and share student work with this LCD projector.

By providing my classroom with an LCD projector, you will help the students learn technology skills that will greatly aid them once they are released. They will be given assistance in the form of education that will make them more hirable in today's workforce. You will aid the students in making a positive change in their lives so that they do not just become another statistic.
