My students need an MP3 player and a set of headphones for each student to be used for their Daily 5 rotation: Listen to Reading.
When was the last time you listened to a cassette tape? Let's face it, they're out of date and unpopular! Even CDs are becoming a thing of the past. Having an MP3 player in the classroom will allow my students to listen to a wider range of audio books on a daily basis.
I absolutely adore my class.
I looped up with them from 2nd grade to 3rd grade this year. Most of them come from an economically disadvantaged background and have either one or two working parents. The school we attend is designated a Title 1 school. Many of my students are reading below grade level as well. I have a high population of students with special needs in my classroom who benefit greatly from read alouds.
I believe that students need to hear some type of read aloud each and every day. Hearing fluent, expressive readers helps to build a student's own ability to read fluently and expressively. Having an MP3 player and a set of headphones for each student will allow them the opportunity to hear audio books every day. Not to mention it's fun! My students who are reading below grade level will be able to hear fluent readers and increase their exposure to a variety of texts.
In our 2nd grade classroom we had 4 desktop computers available for student use.
They were able to listen to books online everyday. This year our classroom only has one computer. We share a laptop cart with the entire grade level and must reserve it each time we want to use it. With our ever changing technology, it is my goal to provide my students as much exposure to it as I can. I believe this is a small start to that goal.
