Our middle school has 966 students in two grades. Over 18% of our population qualify Special Education or 504 services. Additionally, over 21% of our students receive English Language Services. Over 50% of our student population qualifies for Free and Reduced Lunch. A little over 22% of our students are in the Gifted and Talented Program.
My students are a very diverse group who are hungry to learn.
With the hands-on materials provided in this grant, I can help address their learning needs in an engaging, fun way.
My Project
Life science is way more interesting when the students are hands-on with their learning, and even more so when technology is incorporated. The young minds of 6th graders are very curious and a technology-based hands-on microscope will engage their minds even more.
Microscopes are such a magical part of learning, and although my students love working with them, they also have a hard time using them.
A digital microscope will help my students see on the projector what they should be looking for before looking in a regular microscope. The digital microscope has more possibilities beyond just showing what to look for under a microscope. It also takes video footage for a live streaming of living organisms. The digital microscope also detaches from the stand and will magnify/project anything it picks up, opening up the list of possibilities of things to see under a microscope without preparing a slide.
The digital microscope will also extend the learning possibilities of my students by allowing them to use the digital microscope on anything (not just a prepared slide) and watch live videos of living microorganisms. This new addition will make our microscope usage and learning even more memorable.
