"I believe this passionately: that we don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out if it."
Ken Robinson.
I am bothered by the truth of this quote daily and have made it a core goal of my career to be an agent of change in this area.
My class consists of a diverse population.
There are students who have the latest technology and there are still others who have no technology or internet access at home. They are all growing up in a digital age where they could have access to vasts amounts of information at their fingertips. The problem is, those who have it, have this access at home, not at school where they are expected to do the bulk of their learning.
This presents two problems: How do we teach students in a digital age if we have no technology? How do we decrease the achievement gap between the students who have technology and those who do not?
Students need access to technology at school so they can apply it and incorporate it into their learning, Students also need guidance in digital citizenship, technological collaboration, global publication, and information validity. This needs to happen at school and it needs to happen for all students.
My Project
My students will be able to use these chromebooks to research information and collaborate with peers using Google Docs and other applications. Students will also be able to create and share presentations with live and digital audiences. Additionally, students will be able to learn paperless alternatives for completing and turning in assignments.
These Chromebooks will have a huge impact on the way my students learn.
This school year, my class is moving toward a more collaborative approach to learning that includes group research, projects, and applications. We are also moving toward the use of digital resources in Math and Language Arts. These Chromebooks will bring these much needed resources into the classroom to accomplish these goals, as well as give students access to technology they may not otherwise have access to.
