Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in the south-east side of San Francisco, surrounded by predominately black and brown students, and children of immigrants. Many of my students are from various backgrounds and several others are commuting from the east bay. With a multicultural background, students have a tapestry of wants need, dreams, and goals. The challenges that my students face reflect the rapidly changing demographic in the city and gentrification which has caused many families to move out and forced them to commute. The small size of our school helps our students to build stronger connections with the staff as well as students that lasts long after graduation.

Our small school allows students to experience and learn things not just about who they are, and their heritage, but also about being able to learn the meaning of community engagement and what it means to fight for social justice.

Students at our school are taught about oppression, equity and allyship, how they can become active in their community, their city, and beyond. We also give our students the opportunity to take Career Technical Education courses, and prepare students for job readiness.

My Project

As we come into the new year, students still have a array of different needs that need to be met while school is in session. One of those needs is just having snacks for every day. A lot of students come to school either not having breakfast or having lunch so it's always good to have certain food on hand that they enjoy. It's also good to have multiple options for kids a lot of students who may not have access to lunch or certain breakfast foods.

Snacks and water bottles in class help benefit the students because it helps them focus on their work rather than focus on being hungry and can help them get to the day.
