My Students

I am the librarian at a small public school which is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. My school has 150 students of many diverse and unique backgrounds. We are a Title I school with a poverty rate of 97%. Almost 15% of our students are homeless. Numerous families receive weekend food assistance in their child's backpack from our local food bank.

Many of my students are reluctant readers, and academic success does not come easily or quickly.

In our school, we strive to create a warm, safe, and welcoming classrooms while maintaining a fun, creative, learning atmosphere.

My Project

For many of my students, the only library they will ever visit is the school library. Every week I try to expose my students to new literature and to hopefully develop a love of reading via the traditional story time. With my older students, I try to engage them with novels by reading selected chapters and "book talking" several books.

I also believe in using multicultural literature with my students who visit the library, thus I have requested the winners and nominees of the Coretta Scott King illustrator awards.

Additionally, I have requested books about individuals with disabilities, such as the Schneider Family Book Award nominees. These books can help young children better understand about physical and mental challenges. I've asked for library binding or hard cover binding for these books so students can come and enjoy these books for many years.

Having the latest and best children's literature will encourage my students to develop a love of reading to last a lifetime.

With your help, my students will be ready and eager to reach their reading goals!
