My Students

We have approximately 700 students in grades 9-12. Many of our students are reading below grade level. Our students come from all races and demographics. While a lot of our students come from stable homes, there are many who are couch surfing each night.

Over 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

They do not have the privileges of students who live in higher socioeconomic areas. Therefore, we do not often have the latest and greatest supplies, technology, or tools other schools may have.

My Project

We desperately need current books for our students and what better way than to add books that have been honored in a variety of categories. These books chosen are all 2020 ALA Award winners, including YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults, The Sydney Taylor book award presented for outstanding books that authentically portray the Jewish Experience, The American Indian youth Literature award that honors the very best writing by American Indians, Schneider Family Book Award for books that embody an artistic expression of the disability experience & Alex Awards for the best adult books that appeal to teen audiences. These will enrich our student body by positively influencing people's self-identity or perceptions of others. Several of our English classes come down to choose books and these will be available, so they are not only utilized for classwork but are also available to the general population for reading for pleasure.
