Help me give my students a class set of books about water shortage in Africa that we can read together and books so that my students can compete in the NC Elementary Battle of the Books.
I am the media coordinator (teacher-librarian) at a small, rural elementary school in the north eastern piedmont of North Carolina. The largest employer in our county is the local school system. We have very little industry and 85% of my students live in poverty. I see each class of students for one 45 minute class each week and I am the sponsor for several clubs at my school including the North Carolina Elementary Battle of the Books Competition of which I am also the District Coordinator. Most of my students are avid readers who love coming to the library to get a new read.
The school population is right at 200 total students and students average checking out 900 books each week!
My Project
This project will allow me to purchase books and audiobooks to get my students reading and exposed to great literature.
One of the things I requested in this project is a class set of books "Long Walk to Water" about water shortage in Africa.
We are a global school and I feel that reading this book together will help my students learn what life is like for children their age in the daily struggle to survive with water- which we completely take for granted. I feel it will expose them to other cultures and will help them develop a sense of empathy for others at the same time.
The other books and audiobooks in this project are from the 2019-2020 NC Elementary Battle of the Books Competition List. We are lucky enough to already have some of the 15 titles in our library collection. Materials on this list will allow us to purchase the remaining titles we don't have as well as some audio versions so that students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities may "read" the books and participate in the competition as well.
