Our school is in an urban area in Virginia. We take pride in being the most diverse elementary school in our district and represent about 30 different languages that are spoken by our students.
Our students and teachers love books and make reading a special part of each day.
Along with motivating our students to read books they enjoy, our teachers are always working to increase our students' academic achievement and social-emotional skills. We are proud of our school community!
The Global Read Aloud project is designed to provide children across the world the same reading experience with a specifically chosen book. For middle grade readers (fourth and fifth graders) Amal Unbound, by Aisha Saeed has been selected. We have a very diverse school and always aim to put a variety of books into the hands of our readers. I'm thrilled that this fiction book takes place in Pakistan and will be easily related to by many of our students. For others, it will provide the opportunity to learn about a culture that may be very different from their own. Books are the key to learning empathy about others and we can't wait to participate in the Global Read Aloud this fall.
