Hundreds of students walk through our library doors each and every day. As a school community, we are wonderfully diverse. Our students have diverse racial, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds, diverse socio-economic experiences, diverse interests and hobbies, and diverse learning needs. We celebrate what makes each of them unique, and we support them in finding connections to their learning and to each other.
Every one of our students is curious, capable, and compassionate.
They are readers, writers, scholars, scientists, athletes, artists, and advocates for themselves, their communities, and their planet. They see a brighter future and our goal is to help them achieve those dreams. Whatever we can do to help them navigate the obstacles in their way, we want to be there to encourage, to guide, and to provide.
"Let's find out together!" is our library motto and mantra. When students walk through the door needing a book, a resource, or an answer, they will know that together we can find what they need. They know their school library is here for them and it's a place for exploration and discovery.
My Project
Our school library is evolving to better meet the needs of our community. We want to provide equitable access for all students to a space where they can explore and make discoveries with creative problem solving through the engineering design process.
We are introducing a Makerspace into our school library program!
We will begin small, with students self-selecting to come during recesses for 20-minute time slots. Students will use LEGOs, K'NEX, building straws, marble runs, IQ Builders, and snap circuits to create their own solutions to engineering challenge task cards. As the program matures, we hope to expand into coding, robotics, and more complex engineering challenges. The materials requested for this project will provide a sustainable means to introduce the engineering design process and allow students to explore in short bursts of time. All of the materials are reusable and easy to store in our limited space.
Our Makerspace will open doors to STEM opportunities for our diverse student population. We hope to reach those students who have a knack for tinkering and building but who may not otherwise have an outlet for creative expression in that way. The Makerspace will develop their problem solving skills, their collaboration skills, and their awareness of and fluency with the engineering design process.
