Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our school, we do our best to provide an atmosphere that comes along and supports all kinds of learners. We have many students who are English Language Learners and more than half of the population is low income. My third grade students are very enthusiastic learners! Third grade is really important as it is the year when they start to develop a sense of how important their learning is to accomplishing their future goals.
Throughout their third grade year, I watch as my students start making connections, ask deeper questions, and begin to learn empathy when shown life from different perspectives.
My Project
From the first to the last week of their third grade year, my students work on and struggle to memorize their multiplication facts and consequently, their division fact families as well! This is one of the most foundational aspects of math in third grade. If you don't learn them fast, it's easy to fall behind on everything else (word problems, equivalent fractions, finding an unknown number in a multiplication or division equation). We teach all the strategies: arrays, equal groups, repeated addition, skip counting songs, etc., yet still find it to be a struggle. They just need practice.
Using multiplication flash cards, wrap-ups, and relevant learning games and resources from Teachers Pay Teachers will help my kids practice more and help them in their multiplication success.
Just last week, I dropped $10 on an Among Us multiplication math review game from Teachers Pay Teachers with amazing results! They didn't want to stop playing - solving math problems just became fun! I remember learning my facts in third grade and found great success using the wrap-ups as I was able to self check on the back! I also found them so fun and would race my classmates, seeing who could solve them correctly first.
I believe if I got them to become so involved in their games, eventually, they will start to remember the facts they are practicing with their new activities and find success in other areas of math that follow, as well as in their testing later this year!
