My students need a classroom set of calculators to help in their pursuit of higher algebraic thinking.

My school offers a humanities-based curriculum, emphasizing higher order thinking skills and multicultural studies. We have an emphasis on accelerated instruction in Literacy, Science, and Math. World Language classes are taught from kindergarten through eighth grade.
Most students are polite and hard working, but approximately 25% of students have an extremely tough time with school and need more emotional support than the school can provide. The teachers are extremely hard-working, kind hearted, and competent.
We, as a staff, want to prepare our students for socially responsible careers and lifestyles beyond high school. Educational resources such as copy paper, calculators and pencils are not being met by our school district.
75% of our students come from low income families and 10% of our students are diverse learners.
I am a seventh and eighth grade math teacher in dire need of a classroom set of calculators. My students are doing their best to over come their math anxiety and prepare for new material. Having calculators present and ready to reassure themselves they are on the right path in the moment would be a blessing. The mastery of math content requires repeated practice with constant constructive feedback. I have found that students will often work diligently, believing they understand a concept, only to discover upon checking that some simple mistake has led them to all the wrong conclusions. With scientific calculators with increased exponent, fraction, and root capabilities beyond that of a four function calculator, students would gain more agency in being able to check their own work and discern their mistakes independently while I am assisting other students. These tools will help my students to develop their skills as self-driven problem solvers. There are also many math skills that can be executed much more quickly with a calculator after students have mastered the concept, allowing our exploration of the world to expand to much larger or much smaller numbers without the tedium and wasted time of forcing students who have demonstrated proficiency to make paper and pencil calculations.
