Help me give my students basketball goals worth aiming for. Our current backboards are lacking in the necessary markings to make our students better players. We need backboards that are newer and have the shooters square marked.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Let me introduce you to a group of wonderful students that choose to attend an environmental science STEM magnet less than 15 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Over sixty percent of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch benefits. The majority of our students live in apartments or densely populated areas where they cannot experience what the environmental magnet has to offer with its 39-acre campus that adjoins a university ecolab, a preserved wetland. The introduction to STEM careers is also critical for our low socioeconomic families. The student population is diverse, but they all have one thing in common, their love and desire to learn about the environment and STEM.
My Project
Our school has a higher percentage of student-athletes than most of our district schools, and in order to improve the game, we allow more kids to play, leading to more teams. The teams are getting better, but one thing that would really help would be updated equipment. Our backboards are very old and have had the shooters square put on by hand.
We want to show the students we believe in their ability to grow and we know that students are often driven by having better equipment that makes them feel important and tell them that we care about them and believe in them.
These two backboards are not NBA caliber, but they are a definite step up from what we have.
