1st yr Baseball Program in Need of Equipment/Low Income Area
My students need six helmets for their protection from injuries on the field. They also need a home plate and pitchers plate for their safety so that no injuries occur while stepping on them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Athletics provide students an opportunity to receive a higher education and also teaches students about motivation and self discipline; not only on the field but also in the classroom.
My school is located in a small town in Mississippi. The area is very poverty stricken; therefore, their parents cannot provide their child with anything other than the necessities. My students show a real interest in baseball, but their parents have no means of providing them with the equipment needed to play.
The helmets will provide the team with the equipment needed to play games and protect the players from injuries. The bases will also be a safety feature to help the players from injuries to their ankles or knees.
In the area that I teach and coach, the students have nothing to be proud of. Anything new that they receive, it will show that we care about them and how much we want the program to succeed. Building a program at this school means a lot to me. It will teach these students about working hard and teamwork. Throughout life I have seen where baseball taught me about hard work and discipline. It's taught me that you have to work hard if you want to succeed and reach your goals. I'm trying to teach my team the same thing I was taught and that it's not about winning or losing but working hard and playing together as a team. Teamwork is something that not only takes place in athletic competitions to reach a certain goal but also in the everyday working world.
