Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are new to middle school this year. They are experiencing a big transition in their lives as they enter secondary school and face the new challenge of having multiple teachers in multiple classrooms. Like many in their position, they come to me with joy and enthusiasm for learning, and a desire to do well and belong.
These students are the children of immigrants or immigrants themselves; they are emerging bilinguals, and offer the unique lens of a working class or low income background, with a simple desire to get the best possible education for themselves.
They have dreams of a better future and limitless potential, and with the right resources and the right experiences, they will discover their boundless potential through the empowerment that a great education can provide.
My Project
A student-centered collaborative learning environment focuses on students learning from and with each other; rather than giving students all the information they need to know, the students themselves will organize and re-present the information using poster paper or a dry erase easel, and will be able to develop and modify their ideas as they explain concepts to a partner using individual white boards. Students will participate in many group projects that will connect their real-world expertise to science concepts, all while developing their collaborative skills. Their creations will require some of the basics: scissors, glue, and paper. The goals of these different experiences are to empower students by making them the center of their own learning, and creating opportunities for engaging activities that tap into students' natural curiosity about the world around them.
