My students love reading, but many of them do not have books on their reading level at home to read. Many of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch, and unfortunately, they may not be able to afford to buy books on their ever-changing reading levels.
I have the sweetest bunch of first graders.
My students love to read, but I see their frustration when they are unable to read the words in books because many of the books in our classroom library are too difficult for them to read. They love the feeling of reading the words in a "good fit" book to me. They work so hard and are so excited to become better readers, and they beg for the chance to read with me daily. I feel so blessed to work with such sweet, loving students who aim to please and who love to learn.
My Project
I told my students that I would be working hard to get "good fit" books for them, and they were so excited at the thought of having books that they could read. They love reading, and even as first graders, they recognize the value of a good education and learning to read and write well.
Many of my students came to first grade saying, "I can't read," but I have seen how far they have come and how excited they are when I give them books that are on their reading level. I know the kids would love to be able to choose their own books from our classroom library and to have a variety of books that they can actually read. My children are ready to learn to read more challenging texts, and they just need the resources to be able to do so. Through learning to read, they will be more likely to graduate from high school and college. I want the best for my children, and these books will change their future by giving them the gift of learning to read.
Many of my students come from homes where the reality is that their families are stressed daily about how they will afford to buy clothes, school supplies, and food for their children.
If I am able to provide my students with books that they can read, they will be able to share their love of reading and school with their parents at home each day.
