What's one of the most important life skills for children to learn in first grade? Organization! My students will become more independent and self-reliant using these essential school supplies.
Visiting my classroom is almost like visiting the United Nations!
In addition to learning English, my students speak a variety of languages at home including Chinese, Spanish, and Bengali. They are eager, expectant, and joyful learners, who love doing hands-on activities. These first graders attend an urban elementary school, and the majority of the class qualifies for free breakfast and lunch, which is an indicator of a high poverty rate.
My Project
Responsibility and organization will be the name of the game with the new mailbox system. Each week, one student will be in charge of distributing important fliers and homework. At the end of each day students will practice collecting the mail and organizing it in their take-home folders.
The budding writers in my classroom will benefit from clipboards, as they write real life stories and scientific reports. Children will be able to write anywhere in the classroom - on the rug, on the couch, or at tables using their handy hard surfaces. Also, flexible work spaces will allow all writers to feel successful.
For mathematicians, a fresh set of dry-erase markers will help students learn math facts in a flash. These thin markers are the perfect size for small hands and fingers.
Finally, the cork board will help readers learn new words from a bulletin board at eye level.
Organizational skills are paramount on the path to college and beyond!
Not only with these items help my students practice getting organized, but also children will become better human beings as they learn to take care of their special, new supplies.
