Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in a very rural area in the town of Earth, Texas. My students are all hard-working, sweet souls, with big smiles who love to learn new things! Because of socio-economic restraints, many have not been exposed to some of the many luxuries of life - including being able to print in color from a computer. In fact, at Christmas I had a student cry when he tasted hot chocolate with marshmallows for the very first time. In 1st grade we have 7 students who are learning English as their second language, 3 who receive speech services, and all 22 receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
In first grade we like to use colorful hands-on phonics cards and picture cards. This helps all students learn the 74 phonemes in the English language, but especially is helpful to our English Language Learners. We also like to use the color printer for math activities. Having access to colorful and eye-catching manipulatives would be such a bonus for our students. We would also like to be able to print out our student-made research reports. Most students choose to research about their favorite animals, create a power point for the class, and print out a colorful brochure about their animal of choose. Being able to print in color would make all the difference for our projects.
