This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how excited you were to share everything that happened to you over the weekend with your teacher on Monday morning? Do you also remember getting to class on Monday morning and not being able to tell your teacher everything because all your classmates wanted to share out too?

I have 22 eager first graders who always have something to share: whether it's what they had for breakfast that morning, what movie they saw over the weekend, or what their siblings did to them that made them laugh!

Unfortunately, there is simply not enough time in the school day to have them orally share out. They are English Language Learners living in an inner city neighborhood on the road to college for sure! Our school’s motto is “College for Certain” and every teacher at my school, including myself, expects to see each student in college! I want them to know that what they have to say is very important and that their words are valuable; I do not want them to ever think that their stories are not worthy of being heard. Since writing is such an important component when it comes to expressing ideas, I could encourage them to write all these stories down during our Writer's Workshop. Their writing will improve and they will be able to see their stories down on paper.

My Project

I have a class full of inspired writers who are developing their fine motor skills. The beginner's pencils would be of great use because they wouldn't have to worry about not being able to hold a pencil properly without breaking it and if it happened to break, then having a sharpener that can sharpen their big pencils available in the classroom will ensure that they have the supplies they need readily available! Since I will need to model the writing process for them, I will use the whiteboard to brainstorm ideas and knowing them, I will be writing a lot which is why whiteboard markers are needed for our usage. I will also need to keep a record of my steps on chart paper and having the ability to use markers of all colors to color-code my steps (i.e., editing, revising) will make it easier for them to see the different steps. Once they publish, I want them to know that I have read their work, so writing on post-its with the sharpie pens will make it easier for them to see my comments.

My first graders will be writing with me 5 days a week for the entire school year.

This is plenty of time to practice their writing skills. Ensuring that the supplies are there will make it easier for them to focus on the most essential component of writing: discovering the beauty of their words!
