My school is a Title I school that sits in the heart of Washington, DC. I have a group of first grade students who are fun-loving, eager to learn new things, excited about school and love to read. My classroom would be considered a blend of cultural heritage and social needs. Many of my students have been in the US for less than two years. They inspire me every day to do my best to address their needs.
To meet their needs, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, alternative seating, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
A core struggle for elementary school students can be geometry. Understanding the properties of shapes in the abstract is very difficult.
Young learners need concrete manipulatives they can touch and feel to gain better understanding of shapes.
The requested materials are enough for the 83 students of 1st Grade to have 18 geometric shapes that they can join with others to form concentric figures. In addition, the activities requested can be scanned and sent to students as activities on their Microsoft OneNote Class Notebook or printed as photocopies for the students to fill with their wooden shapes.
In short, with Donor's help, we can deepen understanding of Geometry to take with them to 2nd grade and beyond!
