My Students

My students come to 1st grade as aspiring readers! They are eager to take the skills they learned in Kindergarten and transfer them to reading books. For some students this is a very challenging task. The materials I am requesting will help those students achieve their reading goals.

84% of our students qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch.

Also, 51% of students receive English Language services. We have many students in 1st grade that come from different countries, and this is their first ever experience in a classroom. They are eager to learn and it is very exciting to watch them grow. In 1st grade, reading is very important to all students. Last year many students grew over nine reading levels! But this is not the case for all students. One difficulty I noticed during my first year was independent reading time for struggling readers. During guided reading time, the teachers have small groups of students who work on phonics, reading and writing with a teacher. The rest of the students are independently reading at their desks or working on various reading/word work activities. For struggling readers, I want to implement a station (iPad), where students could work on phonics actives, reading applications and listen to audio books on an iPad.

My Project

I am requesting an iPad for the students to use during our Reading Block. On the iPad I will record myself reading hundreds of books at different reading levels. When the students are not working with a teacher, they can listen to the audio books and follow along. This will help the students build their vocabulary, begin to learn how to decode words and find patterns that will help them begin to read. On the iPad the students will also independently work on word work/phonics applications. We are beginning a new phonics curriculum in Minneapolis Public Schools this year called Reading Horizons. The Phonics Program has an application that can be used on iPads that the students can work on independently. Their data is tracked and the teacher can make adjustments to help them with their reading. The students will also work on sight word activities that will help them begin to understand the vocabulary in the A, B, C and D reading level texts.

According to the American Educational Research Association, "A student who can't read on grade level by 3rd grade is four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than a child who does read proficiently by that time." My goal is to have all the 1st graders at grade level or higher at the end of the year.

The iPad I have requested will greatly help struggling readers with their phonics, sight words and reading skills. It will help support them independently when they are not with a teacher.
