My students are a group of energetic first graders who come to school each day eager to learn. They attend a high poverty Title I school in rural Georgia and over 85% of my children live in poverty.
Regardless of our socioeconomic status, these students are young, ambitious, and smart.
Despite their hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn as much as they can so they can be successful. I teach an amazing group of first-graders who come to school each day with smiles on their faces.
My Project
Reading is an everyday activity in our classroom. Supplying my students with a variety of genres is a must. I am asking for the Prize-winning TOON Books collection plus guide to Comics for every student, because comics are so popular and are fun to read. First, this collection will provide various leveled books that are perfect for my young readers who are scaffolding their reading skills. Next, these comics contain short sentences that include repetition and sight words that early readers have to learn.
The facial expressions and body gestures that comics show can encourage social and emotional learning.
I will use these books to discuss mind growth and mastering emotions like anger. The book, Nina by Hilary Knight, tackles anger in an age appropriate manner that I can use to discuss such issues.
The comic format will help my students develop comprehension strategies and skills that will lead to fluency because comics are great way to use visualization and imagery for making connections.
