Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school, G.B. is located in CA. It is a Dual-Immersion magnet school that serves socio-economically disadvantaged students, English Learners, and Special Education students as well as mainstream students.
All students at G.B.
are part of the Spanish Dual-Immersion program. The goal of the program is to create proficient bilingual and bi-literate students who are sensitive and aware of other cultures. My first-grade students attend school eager to learn how to read and write in Spanish and English daily. My students will greatly benefit from DonorsChoose contribution.
My Project
My students love listening to the Magic Tree House stories in Spanish. This is a special time when we come together to the rug and they listen to the Adventures of Annie and Jack as they travel to different times in history.
My students are learning how to be "good listeners" as these are chapter books that have few pictures.
They are learning how to visualize what is being read. This is an important transition in reading stages. They are moving from reading picture books and using pictures to support understanding to reading chapter books and making meaning through content.
I have to rely on school and public libraries to have access to the next book in the series. Many times the book that we need is checked out to somebody else and have to wait weeks before we can get it. Also, Spanish copies of this series are hard to find, making the waiting period even longer.
