Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 1st grade class is comprised of 23 students. They are a diverse group of students with various academic and social needs. For example, I have a few students who receive speech, academic intervention services, live in shelters, or go to after school programs because their parents can't help them with homework.
As their teacher, I want my students to enjoy learning and strive to be anything they want to be.
These 5-7 year olds are eager to soak up learning. They have the, "I think I can attitude." Do you remember the book, The Little Engine that Could? I'd love for my class to say, "I knew I could," at the end of the year.
My Project
My first graders are exploring and experimenting with numbers this year. They want to learn how to count up to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. They want to make numbers by adding and subtracting. They want to find ways to make patterns and solve word problems using different strategies.
My 1st Grade Math Wizards need hands on math games and tools to experience what math really means!
The best way to understand a number is to use actual objects to count. They'll play games and use tools that will show what adding and subtracting really means visually. They'll use teddy bear counters to make patterns and to learn skip counting. Using counters and number bond tools will bring out a child's way of thinking to show that there's lots of ways to understand and solve real world math problems. They'll learn about math all while having fun!
