Everyday, students experience the wonder of geometry. Patterns, shapes, motion and angles are all part of a child's world. A large part of the young student's work at developing a math awareness begins with seeing, describing, and comparing shapes in their world. To enhance my teaching ability and give my students a quality learning experience, I attended a Math Investigations workshop which outlined a project called "Block Town." "Block Town" allows the students to work with actual wooden geometric shapes to construct the buildings of a small town. The focus is to allow the students to become familiar with different shapes in a "hands on" assignment. Even though the workshop has materials avialable in kit form, only the teacher's guidebook was furnished. I teach 1st grade math at a small community school. The students in my class will participate and benefit from this project. Even though I do not teach at an "at risk" school, there is no money available for this extra material. Younger students learn better through manipulating objects. Having this material would allow the students to learn these geometric shapes easier through a "hands on" experience.
