My students are the future of this country. With such a wide variety of backgrounds entering the doors of my classroom each and every day, I am positive that I am looking into the eyes of future leaders of our community, state, and country. These young men and women are capable of just about anything they can imagine, as long as they are given the opportunity.
Despite their very different socioeconomic backgrounds, the students that I have the opportunity to teach all have one thing in common: they need someone to believe in them.
Many of these students do not receive the encouragement and support at home necessary to ensure a positive outlook on their futures. Most of this population comes from working families whose primary goal is to keep afloat financially.
Nearly fifteen percent of residents in the area are living with incomes below the poverty line. Nearly five percent of those residents are living an income below fifty percent of the poverty line. The rate of children in the area living below the poverty level is nearly thirty percent. These are the families that depend on us to teach, guide, and encourage their children to succeed.
My Project
I am seeking a class set of George Orwell's classic "1984" for my senior English classes. Our school has a very limited supply of this title and it is one that I find very important to share with my students.
It is my hope to expose students to a piece of literature that will allow them to parallel the story of a fictional dystopian society with the world in which they are currently living.
The connections that are made through the reading of this controversial novel will fuel intense discussions of relevance between Orwell's vision of the future and our present.
