Hi, I teach second grade at Jackson Avenue in Livermore, California. Jackson Avenue is a Title I school that has gone through many changes in the past year due to the closure of two other schools in the district.
The BIG emphasis in second grade is on reading and developing reading comprehension. We work very hard daily to develop students' reading fluency. However, the children need to read nightly at home. I have many students who have no reading resources at home and who are unable to go to the library weekly to get books. Many of my parents are full-time workers with large families and are trying to fulfill their child's nightly reading requirement. I still have students reading at a beginning first grade level.
I want to start a weekly book bag program that would bring the books directly to the students at their home. The books, at their level and in a variety of genres, would come in a sturdy bag. This would enable the students to read at home and to ultimately increase their fluency.
I know this is the missing key to my program. I am unable financially to provide such a needed program to my students. With your help, I plan to order a variety of books, both fiction and nonfiction, and book bags to get this program started.
