The objective of this project is to promote literacy and facilitate a greater understanding of world geography. In my sixth grade Social Studies classroom, all of my students are working to achieve our big goal of improving 1.5 grade levels in reading. By reading The Cay, by Timothy Taylor, students will work on literacy skills and acquire a knowledge of the geography of western Europe and Central America. Geographic skills raised in the novel will be supplemented in class by the teacher in mini-lessons on geographic markers and boundaries, the making and use of geographic representations, and how physical processes have affected different parts of the earth. I have chosen The Cay because it will offer my students an Afro-centric perspective. I teach all African American students, and The Cay tells the story of two survivors--a white boy and an African American man--of a shipwreck. It is filled with literary devices and geographical references. It is also filled with lessons of prejudice, equality, and character education. In the end, the African American man becomes the hero. It is important for African American students to experience an Afro-centric curriculum. Therefore, The Cay is a great teaching tool because it can be used for literacy and geography, and it will engage the students, additionally teaching them some "life lessons" about character education! Due to an Afro-centric approach and an implementation of inter-disciplinary ways to teach geography, I expect greater student interest and, therefore, a 25% increase in graded performance from each student.
