Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve immigrant and refugee children from 21 different countries. There are 5 languages represented in my room - Vietnamese, Bantu, Arabic, English and Somali. Our school is 98% free and reduced lunch.
The students and families I serve are overwhelmed with gratitude at the educational opportunity their children are receiving. Despite previously traumatic experiences my students come to school excited and ready to engage with the rigorous academic curriculum.
The high value placed on education by our families provides the motivation and support necessary to help students who are years behind grade level expectations.
My Project
Many of my students face the financial and academic barriers categorized with generational poverty. This includes a lack of quality educational resources.
My passion for literacy is driven by the daunting statistics that connect illiteracy, high school drop out and incarceration; 52% of my class is currently reading below grade level.
Grade 2 is one of the last opportunities we have to help students achieve reading proficiency.
In addition to quality instruction, social and emotional support and family partnership, my goal is to foster a love of reading that drives student achievement. I am requesting books. This library of books will provide students' with a variety of topics that match their interests.
