My students need "14 Prize-Winning TOON Books for K-3" because they are reading and learning at least two languages. The pictures paired with words help them learn to read English faster than with words alone.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is designated as a Title I school. Our students come from several countries and speak many languages. Our students excel at working in teams to solve real-world problems, puzzles, and challenges.
Almost all of our students come to our school as English Language Learners, and leave us bilingual in the upper grades.
Our school focuses on real-life projects and hands-on learning including STEM lessons across the curriculum. STEM means the lessons focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Our school uses an Engineering Design Process in all subjects.
Our school is also a Traditional Theme School. This means we have very high parent involvement, wear school uniforms, and offer a multitude of extracurricular activities including over 37 after school clubs. We translate all paperwork into at least Spanish. This year, we are working toward our school-wide STEM certification from an international accrediting agency.
My Project
The "14 Prize-Winning TOON Books for K-3" will be featured books in our classroom library. Students will have the chance to hear excerpts read aloud by me, the teacher first. Then students will get to read aloud excerpts to their classmates. Finally, students will get to check these books out for a week at a time, in addition to their library books on their reading level. We are hopeful that the students checking out the graphic novels will increase their leveled-book reading at a faster rate than if they had not checked out the graphic novels. Because most of our students have other languages than English spoken at home, the support of pictures and graphic elements should help support these emerging and beginning readers developing vocabulary.
