My students need presentation boards, on which to present the important details about their chosen colony. Glue and markers will be used to decorate the boards.
I hope to impart a passion for history and learning to students of the 21st Century! It is through activities such as this one, that I hope to give the students the skills they need to be life long learners.
The students in my district are 1/3 Caucasian, 1/3 African American, and 1/3 Hispanic.
Our school is a Title 1 school, with a large portion of the population qualifying for free or reduced lunch. On the other side of the spectrum, there is also a very affluent population at our school. All of the students at our school would benefit from the inquiry based and hands-on approach offered through this activity.
My Project
This activity is the first research activity and project the students will complete for the school year. It sets the tone for the whole year. Students are excited to present the colony they have researched at the 13 Colonies Fair. As the students tour the booths, they record information about each colony. At the end of the fair, they have the opportunity to look for similarities and differences between the colonies, and this leads to a discussion about the 3 colonial regions. The students love this event and learn so much from the entire process!
Students learn how to find relevant information about their chosen topic, while creating a product on which to display that information.
They exercise their creativity through the creation of their tri-fold presentation board. In addition, former students have brought artifacts, food, clothing, or models, to better illustrate their region. Student communication is strengthened as they teach others about their colony.
