Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a second grade teacher, one of my primary goals is to teach the 25 students in my class how to become independent and confident writers. My school is located in the lower east side of Manhattan and most of the students come from lower-income households (99% are eligible for free lunch). Since a majority of them also come from families where English is their second language, I must constantly strive to find ways to make their writing assignments fun and interesting. In this regard, I believe a digital camera will prove to be an invaluable writing tool. My students have written many fictional/creative stories in class. We are now moving into informational writing. Most of their ideas so far have come from nonfiction books read in class. In order to enhance their informational writing skills and to make their stories come alive, I have a few projects in mind where a digital camera will definitely be of great importance. One of the upcoming projects will be a field trip to the zoo. I would like to have the students take pictures of the animals they choose to do their research on. These photos will assist them in describing the animals physically, as well as capturing any habits/behaviors displayed by the animals at the zoo. The idea of being able to take digital photos of their subjects will serve as the motivation for the children to do the research for their writing assignments. Aside from the zoo, I would also like to plan a trip to Central Park where they could write about nature and a trip to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden where they could write about flowers. With each trip, the children will take pictures of their experiences to assist them in writing their stories. I believe the possibilities are endless. Each child sees things differently and as a result, their pictures will reflect their different views. I think the pictures will be so helpful in helping them put those views into their writing, too. And, the students will be so proud of their work when their stories and photos are displayed in the school bulletin boards for the parents, visitors and other students to see. I believe that a digital camera is very important in helping me assist my students in becoming better writers. It will help them bring these real life experiences back to the school and they will benefit so much from these projects. The more interested they are in their subjects, the better they will write. This confidence will help them become successful independent writers now and in the future.
