At our school, every student is greeted by name and has a personal relationship with more than one adult. Academic success comes from a calm environment with cool colors and caring educators. Within the brick walls, students can make mistakes and grow as digital learners. Their rigorous academics in the core math, reading, science and social studies classes keep the scholars on or above pace with the Minnesota State Standards. These students come to school with great potential, and are predicted to be the world's greatest changemakers.
These brilliant minds will work in jobs that have not yet been created.
It is therefore important that they have exposure to the same level of brilliance shown in their successes, in their classroom instruction and materials. Students who have access to supplies can communicate, advocate and persuade their peers. These warriors will transform the world, and make it a place that we can never imagine.
My Project
In the 5th grade, students transition for each subject block, where math is my primary subject. Students are coming in from various homeroom classes and a wide variety of ability levels. As students, they rise to any mathematical challenge they are given. To advance the current curriculum, my students need a Daily Math Fluency kit to facilitate number talks, and discover new innovative strategies to solve math problems.
In order to be competitive with the advancing world, my students need exposure to difficult, real-life word problems.
Future engineers and software developers are using fewer equations and more critical thinking in their respected fields. My students will be joining the workforce when technology is at its highest level of advancement. Therefore, they need to know how to manipulate and argue ideas, as opposed to using school-based, memorized algorithms. Our classroom tools need to reflect the complexities of the world's real problems. The fluency kit will guide students through mathematical conversations, and help them find answers to the world's biggest problems. The only way to find answers in our advancing world is to equip the next workers with the highest level of education.
