Our elementary school is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our school has 32 languages spoken and over 20 countries represented. We also provide free lunch for all of our students. My class is a room full of eager and excited learners who all have different learning styles and interests, but all love to learn together on the class rug!
In second grade we are working to improve and grow our knowledge of basic math and reading skills!
Every lesson in my classroom begins with a mini lesson where the students gather on a rug before we break for stations or group work!
In my classroom we like to start out the day with a morning meeting. This is a time of the day where we all come together on the rug and talk about the day we are going to have! During this time we also talk about how to be good citizens, build a classroom community and play games!
The classroom rug is not only used for morning meetings but also is the area where we meet to do our lessons for the day!
During the day we meet at the rug to discuss our new skills in reading, math, O.G., and writing! Meeting at the rug allows for the class to collaborate with each other during the lesson and it is a place that is free of distractions so they are able to focus on the skill being taught. The rug is also an area where stations happen and students take books or notebooks for some independent reading or writing!
