Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a place of community, shared expression, collaboration, mindful practice, and new learning experiences. A lot happens in this classroom beyond reading, writing, and math. My students come from all parts of the community as my particular program is not available in all of our district schools. My program is considered a transitional developmental delay classroom to address the students' social-emotional needs. With this, my students come from all parts of our city and bring with them the experience of their families, homes, and neighborhoods. My students often present with temporary homelessness, childhood trauma, and foster care.
One hundred percent of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch.
Sometimes, these things enhance our student learning and make it a richer experience for everyone. Other times this brings chaos and conflict. Whatever the students come with, we work together to be a classroom community of learners moving forward to achieve academic and social success.
My Project
In our ever-changing world, one thing is certain: a little kindness goes a long way! With COVID-19, my students are confused, scared, and wondering what to do. Inspirational books can help kids learn how to solve problems and make positive changes in their worlds.
Since children often learn best by following the examples of others, I'd like to create math lessons based on engaging books with characters who help others and promote kindness.
The books on my wish list are heartwarming, inspirational, and showcase how anyone can help others with determination and random acts of kindness. Math lessons will be based on these books to promote coin recognition and values, counting, coin combinations, problem-solving, and goal setting. Lessons will focus on money values and how money can have a value beyond itself.
These books can easily teach students to count, add, subtract, consider wants and needs. A little kindness goes a long way for my students who need just a little extra hug during this time.
