This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you," BB King once said, but many of my students don't see the merit in improving their reading and learning abilities. I want my students to read more at their independent levels to grow their reading abilities.
As a special education high school teacher, many of my students have high incidence disabilities, such as Specific Learning Disability and Emotional Disturbance.
The average reading level of our seniors is a 5th grade level, but is much lower for my students. Our school is in a community with the lowest GDP in the city, so nearly all of our students are eligible for Title I benefits. We want our students to be as successful as possible, but without high interest books that our students can actually read, they will not be able to improve their own reading levels.
My Project
I am using a "social networking" campaign to invest students in reading, such as through Twitter's 120 characters and Putyourfaceinabook. I am determined to see my students reading a book of their choice at all times, but without books, there isn't much opportunity for students to choose books that interest them.
My goal is for students to recognize that reading will lead them to learning which in turn leads to future successes.
My students don't have a school library.
Many of them are lucky to eat 3 meals a day. They deserve the opportunity to read whatever books meet their interests and help them grow to their highest potentials.
Help us build our reading levels with over 120 characters.
