I am an English teacher and department head at Calvin Simmons Middle School in East Oakland, California. While our school is low-income and under-performing in terms of test scores, last year we ran a reading level diagnostic on every child in the seventh grade and realized that 16 of them were reading and comprehending at above the 12th grade level. This led me to create the first honors class that Calvin Simmons has had in the last 10 years. The children who are taking this class all agreed to forego one elective in order to facilitate an extra hour of class devoted to above-grade level novels. This year, the three confirmed novels are: Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm, and The Bluest Eye. However, my school being a Middle school, we do not have these novels in our library. I am asking for a class set of 34 for each of the aforementioned novels so that my honors class can have the materials to excel to a potential they have only begun to reach in their grade level classes. Thank you for your consideration, and please help me provide a real learning experience for these truly special students in Oakland.
