Mr. A. from Charlotte NC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students have recently moved to the United States and do not have sufficient mastery of the English language to pass the state End of Course (EOC) exams. They need native language-English dictionaries in 8 languages to learn the meanings of key terms and translate word problems to succeed on the EOC.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a high school math teacher that works primarily with the ESL/ELL population of my school. The school is in an urban setting and a section of town with a large population of newly immigrated people.
All students in my state are required to take end of course exams (EOCs). This includes the majority of the newly arrived ESL students. The state allows ESL students to use dictionaries on these test for translations, but my school does not have an adequate supply of these dictionaries for each student to have one, or each classroom to have a set for the students to use.
To help my students meet the state's expectations, I would like to have a classroom set of native language/English dictionaries. This will help the students in eliminating the additional confusion caused by an inadequate mastery of the English language possessed by most ESL students. By having this available to them during the EOC, the will be able to more quickly process the word problems found on the exam and thus increase there likelihood of passing the exam and course. Also by having these resources readily available to them, they will be able to more quickly become proficient in English thereby increasing their academic success and possibilities of continuing their education after graduating form high school.
All I ask is that you place yourself in the shoes of a newly immigrated student in our nation. You would probably be very limited in your understanding of both written and spoken English and not able to express your frustrations in classes taught solely in English. By having dictionaries readily available, you would be able to find the meanings of words and phrases, thereby, improving your understanding of English in a slightly more meaningful way than someone simply telling a meaning. You will also be able to use this tool during test when help would not normally be available to you which will help eliminate or lessen part of the stress a test may put on you because you do not know the language in which the test is written. So, with your donation, my students will be able to have the tools needed to help them focus more on the math that the language of a class taught solely in English.
