100 Years of War and Peace

My students need 12 copies each of 6 different books.

Early college in the Appalachian Mountains is seeking to prepare students for college, career and life.

I hope to introduce my students to the joy of reading on their own. After the books are assigned, students will work in groups to set their own reading pace. Also, students will lead book club-style discussions to encourage their peers to read as well.

While the primary focus of the project will be conducted through US History class, connections to the materials being studied will be made in all other high school courses. The juniors will be broken up into six groups of twelve students. Each group will be assigned a book that discusses a major 20th Century conflict (i.e. World War I, World War II, the Korean War, The Cold War, Vietnam) The books selected each offer some unique and challenging perspectives on the conflicts. For instance, two groups will be reading books by Kurt Vonnegut, to see how the genre of science fiction can depict a historical event. Two more groups will read books that are told from the point of view of the “enemy” side. The group studying The Vietnam War will be using a book the examines the human experience in the war, as told through short stories. In addition, two of the books examine the second World War, but they look at the European vs. the Pacific Fronts. Students set their own reading deadlines and guide themselves through book discussions, via literature circles. In their circles, students will take on a rotating sequence of roles as they look at the vocabulary, real world connections, etc.

At the end of this project, each group will create a museum exhibit that teaches others about their conflict and incorporates the book that they have been reading. This “100 Years of War and Peace” museum will be open to the community. It will also coincide with 11th grade theme of the final 9 weeks, "Transitions" Students will see how America transitioned from the 19th Century into the world power it is today. Your donation to this project will also help to show students how events that are studied in the context of history class can be connected to all other subjects. The hope is for this project to be repeated and improved upon in years to come, and having a permanent set of books will make this possible.
