My Students

The 800 students I teach in P.E. represent seven grade levels, three special education classes, and 13 different languages. We are a Title 1 school, so many of our families are struggling financially. We provide breakfast and lunch during the school year and summer, and multiple opportunities for extended learning.

Unfortunately, many of my students do not have opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities outside of school.

My goal is to encourage more exercise by motivating kids to run before school and during recess times.

My Project

My goal is to inspire students to get moving before school and during recess times. I am implementing a 100 Mile Challenge, which will encourage running every day on our school track. I have created a data page for each student to track laps and miles, and want to give incentives for reaching five milestones: Half Marathon, Full Marathon, 2nd Marathon, 3rd Marathon, and 100 Miles.

I would like to give students a personal jump rope when they complete a 3rd Marathon, or 78 miles.

Maintaining a positive learning environment through fitness will have multiple benefits. One short-term impact would include running every day, which has proven to enhance academic focus and on-task behavior. I am also hoping that having a specific emphasis during recess times will decrease bullying.

Long-term impacts would include improving attitudes toward fitness and exercise, increasing cardio, weight loss for some students, setting and achieving goals.
