My students need an audience response voting system.

I teach Integrated Science (Physics and Earth/ Environmental) at an alternative high school in Kentucky. Students choose our school as a last resort before dropping out. They are all at risk, and many for multiple reasons. All are behind in credits. Most have issues with reading and many have undiagnosed learning disabilities. Many are foster children. Poverty, teen parenthood, and brushes with the law are obstacles for many more. Quite a few will be the first in their families to graduate high school and almost all would be the first to go on to college. These are the students the system has given up on. Our school exists to help them rise above all of these obstacles and achieve success in higher education and in life.

My students live in a world of iPods, cell phones, PS3's, Xboxes, and MySpace. They thrive on instant feedback, electronics, and interactivity. Pencil/paper and class discussions leave too many behind. And many of my students are so scared of sounding dumb that they will never raise their hands in the first place. I need to engage every student, because every moment I have with them is just so precious.

These audience response clickers can turn our class into an interactive video game. Students can vote on controversial topics and answer content questions. Once students "vote" using their clicker, the graph of class responses becomes a chance to learn from their peers. This system also gives me instant feedback on students' level of mastery, both as a class and individually. With a click of a button I can see if it's time to move on, or time to pull out another lab or demonstration to deal with lingering misconceptions. This system will give my students the instant feedback they crave while removing the risk of sounding dumb. I have already seen the energy that review games can inject into class, but there are always a few students who remain completely unengaged. "Taking a risk for learning" is a big part of our school culture, but sometimes that risk is just too high. Putting a clicker in EVERY student's hand holds them accountable for showing what they know while lowering the barriers to doing so. The clickers give me the data I need to be more of a coach, who makes adjustments to lead her team to victory, and less of a judge, who passes sentence at the end of a trial.

If I am a coach, my students are the Mighty Ducks, the misfit leftovers that almost noone expects to succeed. I think that these clickers will be a great tool in helping these underdog students overcome the overwhelming odds against them. I want my Mighty Ducks to become the first in their families to earn high school and then college degrees. Be a part of their heartwarming come-from-behind win by translating science into a format my technology-addicted students will love.
