Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of a very large, urban school district with a very diverse student population. We are a dual language Spanish Immersion magnet, in which all students in the school receive half of their instruction in English and half of their instruction in Spanish.
Our building is rich with cultural diversity where 75% of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
The student body is composed of 73% Hispanic, 13.8% Black, 4.7% Multiracial, and 7.3% White students.
As the music teacher, I am fortunate to have every student (K-6) in my classroom throughout the week. Their enthusiasm and creativity in music class is what makes me excited about my job.
My Project
In my music classroom, students not only enjoy listening and moving to music, but they are music makers. They are musicians!
My dream is to have a 1:1 student to instrument ratio and your donation will move us one step closer to that goal!
Currently, I make the best of the instruments I have as classes of 25 students rotate through to get equal play time. How wonderful would it be to have an instrument in the hands of every student? There would be no lost time rotating students to allow everyone equal playing time and experience on the instruments.
Why these instruments? These xylophones are specifically designed to give students hands-on active musical learning experiences. These instruments are specifically designed to allow students to go beyond merely playing pieces and step into the role of composer as they create original musical works!
