Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We start our morning with the teacher stating that the students are champs! They are champs and need to be told that daily. They know that this is an acronym for coats and backpacks put away, homework turned in, all notes on the teacher’s desk, make dismissal changes, and pencils sharpened. My students live in an urban setting dominated by a low income Hispanic population; all students qualify for the free or reduced price lunch program. Our school building, the oldest in the district, is one hundred and eight years old.
We are a culturally diverse class with very diverse learning styles.
I currently have students enrolled from multiple countries. Some of those countries include Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, Iraq, Laos, Niger, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, China, Kuwait, Mexico, Mumbai, Guatemala, and Cambodia. We have many students that are in transition. These students are very happy to attend school and are extremely willing to learn. The majority of the students are English Language Learners. With such a diverse classroom, my students have a high tolerance for other cultures and are respectful of what other students are going through.
My Project
The desks the students use in my classroom are a hodgepodge of leftovers. They are held together with duct tape, screws that do not fit and tennis balls. Trying to create cooperative learning groups is a huge struggle since the desks do not fit together. Students often smash their fingers or get them smashed by other students because the desks are not stable.
Many of the current desks have pieces missing or broken.
The book box areas are coming off and have sharp places that I cover with duct tape. The bottoms of the desks are missing end pieces and are open rectangular metal tubing that can cut. I have taped tennis balls on them to try and make them safe. Students should have decent desks to work at for their jobs as students.
