Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from city hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects & activities that include science, math, and art (Library STEAM Maker Space!)
My Project
Last week one of the new students asked me if I had any Legos in the library. I had just a few that had been donated so I decided to create a Library Maker Space with Legos!
Students can choose different Lego replicas of actual buildings & learn about planning, creating, AND architectural design!
Students will be able to sort and store the Lego pieces as they work on their projects. Because the storage cart is movable, it can be "checked out" to a class for a special project.
After students have worked on the building kits, I will ask to see if they can create some of the buildings here in this city. (City Hall is only a block away so they can make sketches, measure, and take photos to help get an accurate Lego replica!!)
