Help me give my students a strong sense of numbers with opportunities for rigorous, strategic thinking and problem solving with a collaborative, open ended number line.
Our primary school serves a rural community and houses all students in the county for kindergarten through second grade, with each grade level averaging about 220 students. We are Title I Distinguished and support students coming from a variety of economic levels and ultimately a variety of prior learning experiences.
Developing Creative Problem Solvers ready for college and career through a focus on critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration, is our mission.
We believe success in the 21st century depends less on what you know, and more on what you can do; therefore, we want to provide authentic learning experiences to support creative problem solving and encourage rigorous thinking.
My Project
Learning Advantage F.U.N. Empty Number Line explores the extensive versatility of the number line, while incorporating a motivational manipulative aspect. It represents the number system while, at the same time, is a manipulative where numbers can be moved, matched and plotted, up and down the entire number line. The possibilities for using the number line to identify equivalent numbers are endless, including whole numbers, base 10, ten frames, number words, and subitizing dots. By providing a variety of ways to represent numbers and the relationships between them helps to develop a strong foundation for number sense.
A strong foundation in early number concepts is critical for students’ future success in mathematics.
Research suggests that visual representations, like a number line, support students’ development of number sense by helping them create a mental representation of the order and magnitude of numbers. In addition, explicitly sequencing instruction to transition from concrete to visual to abstract representations of mathematics concepts supports students’ conceptual understanding.
